9 steps to a transracialized lifestyle

Click on the link above to download the Fall ’05 newsletter of Adoptive Families Together. The cover story features my “Nine Steps to a Transracialized Lifestyle.” Briefly, the 9 steps call for parents of children of color to address issues of race, racism, and cultural differences in an up front and explicit way.

Transracializing our lives implies transcending the confining boxes that the process of racialization tends to put us in. Instead of a color-blind, race-oblivious approach, transracialization opens up positive new ways to think about differences and to combat racism, and offers a more hopeful way of “doing” or performing our racial identities in ways that truly support the development of children of color.
